Tuesday's Tip du Jour: Green Onions

Green onions make a great addition to many dishes, and they are even great grilled. Growing your own is very simple if you have some green onions on hand (the key part is having the roots attached); just chop off the roots, leaving about an inch or so of the white part of the onion. You could also purchase green onions from your local Farmers' Market or grocery and reserve the roots for planting, saving the top portions for cooking.

Then plant the roots in the ground or in a pot, or even a decapitated 2-L bottle, like I did. In a few days, you should see the green shoots poking through the soil.

It's like magic. Except not really. These sprouted up after only a week or so. Place the shoots in a sunny window, and you're all set for having fresh green onions whenever you'd like. I like adding some to scrambled eggs in the morning. Happy snipping!
P.S. Ducks are optional.
